Core Web Vitals: real factor, modest weight
Page experience is one of the most over-optimized areas in SEO. The supported picture is refreshingly precise: Core Web Vitals matter, they guarantee nothing, and polish beyond them buys no direct ranking help.
Last reviewed: 2026-09-15
The three supported boundaries
Supported: Core Web Vitals are used by Google’s ranking systems, and the core systems seek to reward content that provides a good page experience. Equally supported are the limits: good Core Web Vitals results do not guarantee good rankings, and page-experience aspects beyond Core Web Vitals do not directly help a site rank higher. Together they draw a precise boundary — fix genuinely bad experience, then stop, because the next hour is better spent on content.
The history is thinner than the folklore
Speed’s ranking history is often overstated. The claims that site speed became a ranking signal in 2010 and a mobile factor in the 2018 Speed Update sit in our evidence base without completed final evaluation — as do Google’s own caveats that those signals were small. We track them as history under review rather than asserting them; the actionable, current facts are the Core Web Vitals boundaries above.
Where Editory sites start from
Editory’s published pages ship zero JavaScript by default and render entirely on the server, which removes the main modern cause of poor vitals before optimization even starts. The SEO audit runs Lighthouse per site and reports the full result — metrics, opportunities and trends — so when something does regress, you see which page and which metric, not just a number.
Editory’s recommendation
Get Core Web Vitals into the good range and keep them there. Do not chase a perfect score: past “good”, the evidence says the ranking return is zero, and the effort belongs in content.
Common misconceptions
“A perfect Lighthouse score means better rankings.”
Supported documentation says good Core Web Vitals guarantee nothing, and experience polish beyond them has no direct ranking effect.
What the engine does

JavaScript sites: what Google actually indexes
Google documents its JavaScript processing precisely: crawl, render, index — and it is the rendered result that counts. That resolves an old myth, and creates a quieter dependency worth knowing about.
Is there an ideal word count? The honest answer
Every word-count claim in our evidence base — for and against — is still unproven at our evidence bar. This page exists to show what that means in practice.
