AI search visibility: what is documented, what is early research
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is young enough that vendors sell certainty nobody has. Here is the documented baseline from Google and Microsoft, and the research signals worth watching.
Last reviewed: 2026-09-15
The documented baseline
Supported, from the engines’ own documentation: Google states no special optimizations are necessary to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; AI Overviews may use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics; Google continues to rank links in its generative Search experiences; and its generative systems review specific information from retrieved pages when generating a response. In short: retrieval still runs on ordinary search infrastructure, and pages still get read.
Measurable citation visibility
Microsoft has made citation visibility a first-class metric: Bing Webmaster Tools defines Citation Share as the percentage of citations attributed to your site among all citations for the same grounding query, and grounded model responses include citations linking to the source websites. From the research side, the original GEO experiments reported that adding citations to source content increased visibility in generative-engine responses — an evaluated, supported finding about the experiment’s results.
How Editory prepares sites for agents
Editory treats machine readers as first-class visitors: every published site serves structured data (Organization or LocalBusiness with hours, contacts and location parsed from published content), an llms.txt summary, and — where enabled — a per-site tool interface (WebMCP and MCP endpoints) that answers from published content only. None of this invents facts: everything a machine can read is derived from what the site already publishes.
Editory’s recommendation
Do the ordinary things well — clear facts, real structure, published answers to real questions — and let the machine-readable layers be generated from them. Be skeptical of GEO services claiming proprietary access or guaranteed AI citations; the documented reality is that retrieval still favors pages that are good sources.
Common misconceptions
“AI search needs a separate, secret optimization playbook.”
Google’s documented position — evaluated and supported — is that no special optimizations are necessary, and that generative experiences run on the core search systems.
What the engine does
renderer:llms-txtEvery published site serves a deterministic llms.txt derived from published pages — never from drafts.
agent-tools:read-tierThe per-site WebMCP/MCP read tier answers agents from published content only; drafts are never exposed, and the whole surface can be switched off per site.
audit:agentic-browsingThe SEO audit runs the Lighthouse Agentic Browsing category locally (llms.txt, WebMCP, accessibility tree, layout stability) and reports it per site.
