Structured data: what it does — and what is unproven

Schema markup is sold as a ranking lever. What the evidence supports is narrower and still worth having: understanding and presentation. The rich-result promises, at our bar, remain unproven.

What is supported

Supported: Google has said structured data helps it understand website content in a structured way and present it more accurately; its current Organization documentation says organization markup can help understand and disambiguate an organization in search; and its Article guidance says author markup can help understand and represent an author. The common thread is comprehension and representation — machine-readable identity — not a rank boost.

What remains unproven

Widely repeated claims we track but do not assert: that valid structured data still does not guarantee a rich result; that markup makes pages eligible for rich results which directly increase clicks; and that no special schema is required for AI Overviews. Individually plausible — some even quote Google’s own guidelines — but none has completed our final evaluation, so the documentation treats them as open. Vendors selling guaranteed rich results are selling something nobody can guarantee.

How Editory emits it

Every published Editory site emits schema.org JSON-LD derived from its published content: a LocalBusiness (address, phone, opening hours, map coordinates) when the site shows place signals, otherwise an Organization, plus a WebSite node. The cardinal rule is honesty — every parser returns nothing rather than a guess, because a hallucinated address or coordinate is worse than none. No authoring required: publish real business facts and the markup follows.

Editory’s recommendation

Add structured data for what it demonstrably does: making your business identity machine-readable. Expect comprehension and presentation benefits; treat rich-result and click promises as unproven, and never let markup claim facts your pages do not show.

Common misconceptions

“Schema markup is a ranking factor.”

The supported documentation describes understanding and presentation. Even the softer rich-result benefits are, at our evidence bar, still under evaluation.

What the engine does

renderer:jsonld:localbusiness

The renderer derives LocalBusiness/Organization + WebSite JSON-LD from published content, emitting nothing rather than a guess when a fact cannot be parsed confidently.
